10 Steps to Select the Right Builder for Your Needs

PUBLISHED: Jul 30, 2015

Selecting the right home building company for your needs and for the type of new home you seek is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your home buying process.

Fortunately, there are some proven methods to speed up the process and to help ensure that you find a quality home builder who’s a good fit to construct your new home.

10 Steps to Choose the Right Builder

#1 Identify your needs

What size, type and price range of home do you need? Indigo have over 60 house designs that cater to all sizes and types of families, lifestyles, land, spaces and budgets.  Our designs also offer some flexibility in alterations to ensure the design you choose is the perfect fit for you.

#2 Experience counts

While every builder was once a new builder, experience still count. Most of Indigo’s staff have been here from the beginning, so they know what the company stand for, the standard that is expected each time, every time, and industry experience that is second to none. Several of them have also built or had their homes built by Indigo.

#3 Are former clients satisfied?

Ask for – and check – references from past clients. At Indigo we are able to provide you with testimonials from former customers.

#4 Verify that the builder is licensed (where required) and adequately insured

At Indigo all of our sub-contractors are high quality tradesmen, who maintain the relevant licences and insurances, and are long term Indigo sub-contractors.

#5 Is there a design fit?

Does this builder have expertise in the style of home you seek? Indigo specialises in narrow lot designs, large traditional designs, and sloping site so we are able to give our customers whatever design they need to fit any kind of block.

#6 Warranty and service

Does this builder provide a warranty and guarantee of service? Indigo guarantees all of its projects.

#7 Resale value

Have other homes that were built by this builder maintained or appreciated in value? Indigo’s homes have appreciated in value over the years, proving to be a sound investment for their owners.

#8 Industry involvement

Is the builder a member of the local Home Builder’s Association?  Indigo has been a member of the MBA (Master Builders Association - Queensland) Member 21597 since 2003.

#9 Tour display homes or customer homes

You should not skip this step. The quality you see in Indigo’s display homes is the quality you'll have in the home we build for you. In addition to our display homes you can also see the quality of our workmanship at  the Queensland Building and Construction Commission's website at www.qbcc.qld.gov.au.

#10 Look for signs of quality

This should be displayed in workmanship, materials and practices when you tour these homes.  Indigo Homes engage in industry best-practices, while adhering to government legislation and Australian Standards to ensure we deliver a range of house designs that are contemporary, relevant, functional and stylish.

With these ten steps above, you’ll be able to select a good builder who’s also a good fit for you, your needs, and the new home you’ll build together.
